Breaking the Silence
In 1995 the editor of Creative Loafing, an alternative newspaper in Charlotte, NC,asked me to write an article about the Shoah. I titled it “The Feel of History.” It ended with the following words: ”We learned to see photographs but not Grandpa, to see disabled uncles, and to see immigrants struggling with a new language. The documented words would have to wait.” In 1998 I began to document the history of the Zechariah family.
